Bio in German

Kurt Gakuro Krammer

became interested in Buddhism and especially Zen during Studies in Modern American Literature in the late 1960s. He started regular Zen training and koan studies with Genro Seiun Osho from 1986 to 2010 and from the 1990s also with Kyozan Joshu Sasaki Roshi in Austria and USA (Los Angeles, Mount Baldy).

After taking Bodhisattva vows with Genro Osho in 1992, Kurt Gakuro founded Zendo Salzburg on his teacher’s advice; by now the most senior dharma group in the region. Meditation classes for people of different  ages and backgrounds in and around Salzburg are still being organized on a regular basis.

Over the years different calls had to be answered: Teaching Buddhism to students at Austrian Schools from 1993-2014, in-service teachers-training for teachers, and school-inspector for Buddhism, lecturer for Zen-Buddhism in a Buddhism course at the University of Vienna and various lectures in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

As the organizer of the Annual General Meeting of EBU in 1993, Kurt Gakuro found his way into the European Buddhist Union, serving as its Vice President for three years. From the mid 1990s onward he has been taking part in the meetings of BTE (Buddhist Teachers in Europe).

Over the last 20 years Kurt Gakuro has taken part in practice and studies of a number of Buddhist traditions besides Zen, in particular, Theravada and Jodo Shinshu. During this time he has made Interreligious Dialogue one of his focuses, be it on the grassroots level or at international conferences in Europe, USA, Asia.
